Hiren boot provides many useful tools and utlities. It provides user to easily boot, recover, partition, reset windows password and many more with a bootable CD or USB. Since creating a bootable CD/DVD is pretty straight forward so i am not going to explain that here. Instead most people have problem in making a bootable USB. So, in order to simplify the process, i am going to explain USB creation process. Keep reading. 🙂

Please note that bootable USB drives can only be booted via computers who supports boot via USB option in BIOS.

Tools Required:

1. USB format (Download from any one location Here, here,here or USBFormat.zip (34KB))
2. grub4dos (grub4dos.zip (179KB)
3. Hiren BootCD any latest version (Download from here)
4. USB drive atleast 1 GB
5. UltraISO or 7zip(freeware)
6. Administrative Rights
7. One brain optional. 🙂

Hiren boot USB making is a two step process.

1. Make a USB bootable.
2. Place hirenboot in USB

Section I: Making USB bootable:

In order to make a USB drive bootable, following requirements must fulfill.

– A USB must have a primary partition
– The primary partition have to be “active”

Step 1: Checking Drive Status

Open “Computer Management” by right clicking Computer->Manage.
Click on “Disk Management” from Storage in left pane.

Depending upon your disk drives, see the “Removable Disk x” status, which has to be primary partition and active. If

your USB drive is already active, skip to section II. Otherwise keep reading.

Step 2: Making Drive Active

Extract and then Open “USB format” tool and choose your usb from Device list.
[Windows 7 and greater users right click and choose “Run as Administrator”]
Check “Quick format” and click Start. It will erase all data and format the drive.

After that, the drive will be shown as “Active” in “Computer Management, as shown in below screen.

Section II: Place hirenboot in USB

Step 3: Adding MBR

Extract grub4dos and run “grubinst_gui.exe”. Choose Disk according to your USB drive. In my case, i have 16 GB kingston. It can be seen from screen that its 15311M is my USB.
Now from “Part List”, click refresh and then select “Whole Disk (MBR)” and finally click “Install”.

Step 4: Hirenboot

Open Hirenboot ISO file with 7zip or ultraISO which ever your favorite and then extract all files in a folder.
The contents of folder will look like

Copy all the extracted files and folders in the root of USB drive. i.e. x:

Step 5: Finalize

Copy these files from HBCD folder:

Paste these files in root of USB

The USB drive will look like

Congratulations! You have created a “Hiren boot” bootable USB.

How to create USB Boot with Hiren's BootCD

Step 1: Prepare to create USB Boot, USB Ghost for Windows

1. USB capacity of 1 GB or more
2. Tool to format, format for USB. Should use USBFormat, download link here!
3. Tool to create bootable USB capabilities: grub4dos.zip
4. Toolkit to boot and edit computers: Hiren's BootCD 15.2

Step 2: Format USB to FAT32 standard

In order to ensure normal USB operation and boot, you need to convert the USB format you are using to the FAT32 format. Run the USBFormat download tool above, extract it and run usb_format.exe file:

Here you choose as the picture to USB format to FAT32 instead of NTFS:

1. Select the correct USB device in the Device section.
2. Select FAT32 in the File system section.
3. Click Start to start the format. This process is slow depending on the read and write speed and USB capacity (in my test, it takes about 15 minutes to USB USB ).

When formatting the USB, you will see a notification image like this

Step 3: Run the Grub4Dos Installer to create bootable USB capabilities

Unzip 'grub4dos.zip' > run 'grubinst_gui.exe' to create the ability to boot USB according to the steps shown below.

Steps to create USB Ghost Windows

Specifically running the Grub4Dos Installer is as follows:

1. Click Refresh (1) in the Disk section to select the correct USB (2).
2. Click Refresh (3) in the Part List section to select Whole disk (MBR) (4).
3. After making sure to select the right things, click the Install button (5).

Follow this guide to create a USB ghost, install Windows

Step 4: Extract the file Hiren's BootCD and copy to USB

Unzip 'Hirens.BootCD.15.2.zip' >into the unzipped folder > select 'Hirens.BootCD.15.2.iso' and extract it and copy all the files in it to USB.

Step 5: Copy the grldr and menu.Ist files to the USB boot just created

Copy two 'grldr' and 'menu.lst' files and paste them into Hirenboot's USB just created. So where are those 'grldr' and 'menu.lst' files taken? You can get from:

1. The grub folder after extracting the grub4dos.zip file .
2. In the main HBCD folder is extracted from the ISO file of Hiren Boot.

After creating the boot USB, you plug the USB into the computer, restart the computer and enter the BIOS. Depending on the model and operating system, the way to enter the BIOS will vary, usually using keys like F12 or Delete. Once you have entered the BIOS, you select the boot mode from USB, here, we can proceed to reinstall Windows and perform other tasks as needed.
